Can a power station run an induction hob?

The short answer: not on full power, but often on a lower setting. Tefal lists its portable Everyday Slim induction hob at 2,100 W, with seven power levels from 300 W to 2,100 W (Tefal UK). The top setting is above all four power stations' stated continuous output, but the lower settings fit within the larger ones.

Compared on manufacturers' published specs. Ferncharge has not tested these products. Estimates only.

Add your hob to the sizing calculator: add a row with the watts of the setting you'll cook on and the minutes you'll use it (15 minutes is 0.25 hours).

Step 1: power (watts). Which setting fits?

Check the hob's manual for the watts at each power level. Compare the setting you'll use with the power station's stated continuous AC output.

Alphabetical. The 1,000 W setting is an example within Tefal's 300–2,100 W range: check your hob's levels.

Watch for boost: Tefal's hob has a boost that raises the power up to 2,100 W for 5 minutes (Tefal UK). Don't use it on a power station whose continuous output is lower.

Power stations' boost modes: BLUETTI describes Power Lifting for "pure-resistive heating devices", naming hair dryers, kettles and heaters (BLUETTI UK). An induction hob isn't in those examples, so don't count on a boost mode: check the manual.

Step 2: energy (watt-hours). How much does a meal use?

Energy used = watts × time (our arithmetic):

Setting10 minutes15 minutes30 minutes
1,000 Wabout 167 Wh250 Wh500 Wh
1,500 W250 Wh375 Wh750 Wh

Example settings and times. Bringing a pan to the boil on a higher setting, then turning it down, uses less than the high setting throughout.

From a power station's mains socket, add our assumed 10% inverter loss, and remember only about 90% of a LiFePO4 battery's rated capacity is usable (methodology). A 1,000 Wh power station has about 810 Wh available on our assumptions: about 48 minutes at 1,000 W in total.

Camping

On a pitch with electric hook-up, the hob's watts count towards the hook-up limit. See electric hook-up vs power station. Check which pans your hob works with in its manual.

Safety

Use the hob on a stable, heat-proof surface with space around it, keep the power station ventilated and away from spills and steam, and follow both manuals. See our safety guide.

FAQs

Can a portable power station run an induction hob?

On a lower setting, often yes, if the setting's watts are within the power station's continuous rating. A 2,100 W top setting is above all four models above.

How many watts does an induction hob use?

It depends on the setting. Tefal lists seven power levels from 300 W to 2,100 W for its portable Everyday Slim hob.

How long can a power station run an induction hob?

Divide the available energy by the setting's watts. About 810 Wh available ÷ 1,000 W is about 48 minutes in total.
